SACRAMENTO, Calif. — November 5, 2026. The Sacramento County Administration Building at 700 H Street is scheduled to glow green each night through November 11 as part of Operation Green Light for Veterans, a nationwide campaign to recognize military service and remind veterans and their families about available assistance. Sacramento County’s November 3 official announcement says county supervisors issued a proclamation supporting the initiative and scheduled green lighting from November 4 through Veterans Day.

More than symbolic lighting

The county says its Veterans Services Office provides help with disability compensation, veterans’ pensions, enrollment in healthcare programs, survivors benefits, Aid and Attendance, and California’s College Tuition Fee Waiver Program. The office’s accredited claims representatives can help explain documentation and eligibility. Assistance does not mean every applicant automatically qualifies.

How many people received help?

According to the county’s official announcement, its office assisted approximately 13,000 veterans during 2025, filed 4,435 new claims and helped secure $11.5 million in retroactive payments plus $9.5 million in recurring awards. These are county-reported administrative figures, not an independent assessment of how many unique people were approved for a particular benefit.

How residents can participate

Residents who wish to mark Veterans Day can display a green porch or window light in support of service members, if safe and permitted where they live. The National Association of Counties describes the campaign as a way for communities to recognize veterans and promote access to support. The lighting does not itself create a new benefits program or change federal eligibility rules.

Where to seek benefits help

Veterans and surviving family members can visit Sacramento County’s Department of Human Assistance and locate its Veterans Services Office for an appointment and available services. They may also review U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs programs. People should avoid paying unlicensed intermediaries who guarantee benefits or ask for sensitive identifying information through unsolicited messages.
