SACRAMENTO — November 7, 2026. The City of Sacramento is seeking public ideas on how to make existing parking lots greener and more comfortable, with an online survey open until November 25.
What the city wants to design. A planned Parking Lot Greening Guidebook will describe practical design choices, permitting, maintenance, incentives and costs for adding shade trees to existing paved areas. The city is pursuing this as part of an approximately $1 million USDA Forest Service and Inflation Reduction Act-supported project focused on under-shaded neighborhoods.
A pilot at Hagginwood. The first demonstration project is planned for the Hagginwood Community Center parking lot. Officials propose removing selected asphalt, installing irrigation and planting up to eight trees while retaining the existing number of parking spaces. Construction is anticipated in summer 2027, with completion by fall.
Why feedback matters. Parking-lot shade can reduce heat exposure but needs attention to accessible routes, maintenance and pavement conditions. The guidebook and pilot are still being developed; the project description is not proof that eight trees have already been planted.
